Fibre Products - Overview
Many people think of Industrial Hemp products as old-fashioned rope or homespun clothes – not so! Hemp products are in plastic panels in European cars, high value cosmetics, premium animal bedding products, a range of high quality durable fabrics and textiles, specialty papers throughout Europe, essential oil flavourings, lighter and stronger biodegradable polycomposites and about 20,000 other uses and products. Industrial Hemp is an extremely versatile commodity, with uses for the bast fibre, the hurd (inner stem fibres), the seed, the seed oil and plant extracts.
Most of these fibre products require a form of processing to separate the bast (outer stem fibres) from the hurd (inner stem fibres), and then several levels of grading and refining to achieve higher grades of bast fibre product suitable for the different manufacturing uses. Globally, processing mills are located in Europe and Ecofibre Industries is seeking to establish a primary processing mill in Queensland.
Hemp fibre products that we are making available to the Australian market are those that require minimal processing or have been grown and/or processed overseas. This is to establish markets for hemp products and create the supply chain throughput that will build the large-scale hemp fibre industry.
